What are Gold Foil Business Cards?
Gold Foil Business Cards are printed on thick Super paper (400gsm / 19pt) with a Soft Touch matte finish, then enhanced with metallic gold foil applied to selected parts of your design.
The foil is pressed into the surface, creating a warm, reflective finish that catches the light and stands out against the matte background.
Is this right for you?
This works well if you want:
- A bold, attention-grabbing finish
- A warmer, more decorative metallic look
- Key elements like logos or names to stand out
Compared to other finishes:
- Warmer and more expressive than Silver Foil
- More reflective than Spot Gloss
- Less tactile than Raised Spot Gloss

Preparing your artwork
To set up a design with gold foil, you’ll need to separate your artwork into layers:
- One file for your main printed design (background)
- One file for the foil layer (showing exactly where the foil will be applied)

Your foil artwork should be:
- Vector-based
- Black and white only
- Set to 100% black (CMYK 0/0/0/100) for the foil areas
- Saved as a PDF
If you’d rather not build this from scratch, you can use one of the available Special Finish templates.
Design tips for best results
Gold foil works best when used as an accent rather than the main feature.
- Use foil as an accent, not the entire design
- Avoid large solid areas of foil
- Keep the foil coverage to less than 50% of each side
- Simple, bold shapes will give the cleanest result
If you’re unsure, it’s worth reviewing the full Special Finish Guidelines before finalizing your design: Special Finishes design requirements
What to know before ordering
- You can only choose one special finish per card
- Fine details may not reproduce as cleanly in foil
- Templates and patterns are available if you need a starting point
- Special Finish cards are printed on Soft Touch Super paper for the best contrast and application
Under the right light, the gold foil will catch and reflect, giving your design a noticeable edge without needing extra color.
